Kara goes to a local elementary school to teach the children about scientific inquiry and discovery. In addition to discussing the accidental discovery of penicillin, Kara highlighted Pitt’s innovation in creating the first vaccine against polio. The class also got to try out their own laboratory equipment and pipetting, which was probably the best part!
We are happy to report that Stephen's paper entitled "Evolutionary and functional analysis of the invariant SWIM domain in the conserved Shu2/SWS1 protein family from Saccharomyces cerevisiae to Homo sapiens" has been accepted to publication in Genetics. This project was a joint effort from our lab and then lab of Dr. Nathan Clark at Pitt. In this paper we discovered that the Shu complex is an ancient and highly conserved eukaryotic regulator of meiotic and mitotic HR. We found the Shu complex in hereto unknown model organisms including, flies, worms, and fish. Congratulations to Stephen, Camille, Faiz, Dominique, Christina, Michael, Kyle, and Meghan who all contributed to this important work!
