Stay tuned, we have uncovered a link between the Shu complex and localization of Rad52 with respect to the rDNA. It's always been puzzling how many DNA repair proteins are involved in rDNA repair without being localized in the cell nucleolus. Here we report how Rad52, which is normally excluded from the nucleolus, closely associates with the rDNA when the array is destabilized by disrupting the UAF complex. Interestingly, Shu1 is critical for Rad52's close contact with the rDNA but not if Rad52 is unsumoylatable.
