A long time ago in a lab far away, we once had to amplify DNA using methods that required we walk uphill both ways, kill bears with our loose-leaf lab notebooks, and create mutations by scaring the DNA into doing what we wanted. Thank you PCR, for changing the future!
-Christina, reigning lab PCR Queen Kara is awarded the New Scholar in Aging Award from the Ellison Foundation to work on Sgs1, the human homologue of the RecQ helicases BLM, WRN, RTS, that when mutated in humans can lead to premature aging and cancer. The award is to study how mutations in Sgs1 and its human homologues leads to genetic instability and how that contributes to aging. Kara was able to meet the other Ellison Foundation awardies at an amazing conference over the summer at Woods Hole.
