The Basser Center for BRCA is the first comprehensive center for the research, treatment, and prevention of BRCA-related cancers. These hereditary mutations affect both men and women and can be passed down from either parent. BRCA mutations can increase lifetime risk for cancers including breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate and melanoma.
One of the first departments of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the nation, the Biochemistry and Biophyiscs department has a strong tradition of combining cutting-edge technology with impactful biology. We continue to leverage this interdisciplinary approach to yield break-through discoveries in biomedicine. The over 30 faculty members cover a broad range of research areas, with particular strengths in structural biology, chemical biology, gene regulation and protein folding.
Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center is a world leader in cancer research, patient care and education and is a designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. There are nearly 600 clinical trials that treat more than +9,000 patients. In addition to patient care, the Abramson Cancer Center is home to the 400+ basic, translational and clinical scientists who relentlessly work to determine the pathogenesis of cancer. Together, this faculty is committed to improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The Penn Center for Genome Integrity (PCGI) mission is to integrate cutting-edge research in basic and clinical sciences to advance our fundamental understanding of genome integrity and its contributions to human biology. Central to our vision is a mechanism to nucleate outstanding investigators with diverse areas of scientific and clinical expertise across the Penn campus. There are six scientific priority areas including (1) DNA repair, (2) mitotic fidelity, (3) cell cycle control, (4) chromosome biology, (5) immunologic signal transduction and (6) stem cell biology.
The Cancer Biology Program trains students in the core principles and experimental approaches within cancer biology and to empower their ability to conduct hypothesis-driven research to better understand the fundamental mechanisms that cause and define the hallmarks of cancer. Students in the Cancer Biology Program capitalize on the diversity of opportunities that are available across campus ultimately integrating in faculty laboratories within the schools of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Arts and Sciences, and the affiliated institutions Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Wistar Institute, the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, and many others.
